There are hundreds of startup accelerators, and the "best" one depends on your stage, sector and location. This guide ranks the programs founders ask about most, using the data in our directory of more than 100 programs: cheque size, equity, cohort size, how selective they are and who they're for.
Figures come from public program information and our directory. Accelerators change their terms regularly — always confirm on the official site, linked from each program page.
How we compare accelerators
We look at five things:
- Cheque size — how much the program invests.
- Equity cost — the fixed stake it takes, and how the rest converts.
- Selectivity and brand — how much the name helps your next round.
- Fit — stage, sector, geography, remote or in person.
- Format — program length, cohort size, whether you need to relocate.

How to judge an accelerator beyond its terms
Cheque size and equity are the easy part. Before you apply, ask:
- Who are the alumni, and would they take your call? Talk to two or three founders from recent cohorts.
- What happens at demo day? How many investors attend, and how many companies raise afterwards?
- Who will you actually work with? Named partners or managing directors matter more than the brand.
- What's expected of you? In-person time, relocation, reporting.
- What's the follow-on? Does the program invest again in your next round?
A smaller program with engaged partners in your sector can beat a bigger brand where you're one of hundreds.
Which accelerator should you choose?
- You want the biggest brand boost: Y Combinator.
- You want the biggest cheque: a16z speedrun or PearX.
- You sell to large companies: Alchemist or Plug and Play.
- You build hardware or biotech: SOSV.
- You don't have a co-founder yet: Entrepreneurs First or Antler.
- You're in Europe: Seedcamp, EWOR or EF.
The honest answer for most founders is: apply to several. Acceptance rates at the top programs are in the low single digits (see our acceptance rates guide), and each application costs only a few hours. Applyseed lets you draft all of them from one startup profile.
